Archaeology in the Fylde
Until relatively recently there was scant material evidence of Poulton’s prehistoric past, giving rise to the assumption that the area was largely uninhabited. However, new and significant archaeological discoveries have revealed much more about thousands of years of our prehistory.
The oldest was the discovery of the skeleton of the Highfurlong Elk, found by chance in 1970 and thought to be 13,500 years old. In 2008 a Romano-British roundhouse was discovered when United Utilities were excavating pastureland on Garstang Road East, and dated to the second century AD. More recently excavations relating to the Windy Harbour Bypass have revealed evidence of our ancestors from Mesolithic and Neolithic times. These finds have changed our understanding of Poulton’s ancient past.
