About Us
Origins
The Poulton-le-Fylde Historical Society was founded in 1981 by the Rev David Wiseman, who was then the minister of the United Reformed Church in Poulton. Since then it has held monthly meetings open to members and visitors on the second Friday of each month from September to May, with a break from June to August. At the meeting in February 1997 it was agreed to register the Society with the Civic Trust and to change to our current name of Poulton-le-Fylde Historical & Civic Society.
Aims
We aim to encourage interest in the history of the town of Poulton le Fylde, and its surrounding areas such as Carleton and Hardhorn with Newton. We are keen to preserve the positive aspects of the area and its spirit of community.
What we do
We hold monthly meetings (excepting June, July, and August) in the Methodist Church Hall on Queensway, offering talks lasting about an hour by invited guest speakers. These are open to both members and visitors, although seating is limited.
Between 1986 and 2002 we produced occasional printed journals with articles on local history that you would not find elsewhere, and these can be accessed from the Resources section of the navigation menu of this website.
We also liaise with the local Council in planning matters to protect the town’s conservation area and its listed buildings.
Website
We started publishing a website around 2001, replaced in 2024 (after support was ended for our original publishing software). The new domain has the shorter web address of plf-hcs.org.uk, a combination where the first part is the abbreviation for Poulton-le-Fylde Historical & Civic Society.
