Wyre Civic Centre

Wyre Borough Council was formed as part of a reorganisation of Local Government in 1974, bringing together five existing local authorities: Fleetwood Borough Council (incorporated 1933); Thornton Cleveleys Urban District Council (constituted 1900); Poulton Urban District Council (constituted 1900); Garstang Rural District Council (received first charter under Edward II 1314, revised under Charles II 1680); Preesall Urban District Council (constituted 1901).

The new council was initially housed in the properties inherited from the previous authorities, in 10 old buildings scattered across the borough, some in urgent need of renovation. Communications were difficult and running costs high. It was therefore resolved to relocate to a centralised building.

Originally the plan was to build a new set of offices on King George Playing Fields in Thornton (nicknamed ‘Battlestar Galactica’ by the staff on account of its futuristic design). However, in 1985 the Poulton Campus (a former teacher training college on Breck Road, Poulton-le-Fylde) came up for sale, and the Council changed its plans and decided to buy the campus site and convert it.

  • The house named Woodlands was thought to be around 200 years old (the white Georgian style building at the front of the site).
